For the better part of the last 30 years of my life creativity has been (and continues to be), a vital aspect of my existence. It allows me to think outside the box, explore new ideas, design cool stuff and come up with innovative solutions to problems.
However, I often place boundaries, constraints, and rules on myself that limit my creative thinking. Breaking some of my self-imposed rules occasionally helps open me up to a world of possibilities and helps me tap into my full creative potential.
One of the biggest constraints that I place on myself is the fear of failure. I often hold back on my ideas and thoughts because I am afraid of being judged or rejected. This fear can be debilitating and prevent me from moving forward into my purpose. To overcome this, I have had to shift my mindset and understand that failure is a natural part of the creative process. It is through experimentation and taking risks that I learn and grow.
Another constraint that I often put on myself is the belief that I need to conform to certain rules and conventions. I sometimes feel that my ideas need to fit within certain parameters in order to be accepted or considered valid. However, true creativity often comes from breaking the rules and thinking outside of the norm. By embracing experimentation and non-conformity, I have found a freedom in being able to be respectfully creative and uniquely me.
I’m certainly not talking about be outright rebellious here. What I am talking about is being able to break-free of the walls we put up in our minds and hearts that cage us in to a life of boring, a life of just getting by or a life without creativity, joy and excitement.
At the end of the day I often have to remind myself that creativity is not a destination but a journey. There is no end point where I will have “arrived” at a state of ultimate creativity. It is a constant process of growth and exploration. By ditching the boundaries, constraints, and rules that I place on myself, I know it opens me up to new possibilities and opportunities.
