#7 DITCH THE GUILT

What you did or didn’t do is a-okay.

Guilt. It’s a feeling that many of us are all too familiar with. Whether it’s the guilt of not doing enough, not expressing yourself enough, or not living up to your own standards, it can be a heavy burden to carry. I know it all too well. Guilt has been a companion of mine over the years.

When it comes to creativity, guilt can be especially damaging. I have often had feelings of inadequacy and self-doubt, making it difficult to tap into my creative potential and express myself freely. I often feel like I should’ve done things differently at times, or perhaps not done something at all. I felt the pangs of guilt to my core and it’s been an interesting journey to discover how to navigate it to tap into my creativity.

I’ve put together a few tips and insights that have helped me on my journey towards a more balanced and fulfilling life, I hope you find them helpful too:

Embrace your imperfections – This is a big one. The first step to breaking free from guilt is to embrace your imperfections and let me tell you, I honestly think I’ve got a few. But I’ve finally come to understand that no one is perfect, especially not me and that’s okay. The beauty of creativity lies in the dichotomy of light and dark. There’s a serene balance to accepting your flaws and those things you possibly don’t like about yourself, yet choosing to move forward regardless… So I’m embracing my quirks, flaws, the good, the bad and the ugly and I’m learning to express myself in new and creative ways.

Set realistic goals. Guilt often stems from not feeling like you’re doing enough, or not living up to your own standards. To combat this, it’s important to set realistic goals for yourself.

Take a break. Sometimes, the best way to break free from guilt is to simply take a break. Step away from your responsibilities and give yourself the space and time you need to recharge and refocus.

My personal experience with breaking free from guilt has been a transformative one. After years of feeling like I wasn’t doing enough, or I wasn’t good enough I finally found the courage to step away from what I felt was holding me back and give myself the space and time I needed to recharge and refocus.

I started doing freelance & consultancy work that I felt passionate about, and now I’m pursuing a coaching practice to help others navigate the challenges of business, life and leadership. Since I’ve embraced this new path it’s helped turn down the volume on my own feelings of guilt, it’s helped me refocus my energy towards others and not just focussing on me and the ‘what if’s’ I often think.

Breaking free from guilt is one of the keys to unlocking your creative potential. Embrace your imperfections, set realistic goals, take a break, and give yourself the space and time you need to recharge and refocus. It’s the best thing you can do for you.

As a Certified Flourishing Coach I’d love to help you to navigate guilt if you are struggling with it so you can be more creative so let’s talk more.
